Fairlawn Councilwoman Baum Resigns; Replacement to Be Appointed

Only a few days left for candidates to file to run for unexpired Ward 6 term

Kathleen Baum has resigned from her post as Ward 6 councilwoman in Fairlawn.

In a letter dated July 31, Baum it was "with great regret" she was tendering her resignation, effective immediately. She cited "recent decisions of the OPERS (Ohio Public Employee Retirement System) Board" for her resignation.

Baum could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

She was elected to the post in 2011. At the time, she worked as administrative secretary to Fairlawn Police Chief Kenneth Walsh, but is no longer employed there.

City Council has 30 days to appoint a replacement, who will serve until the end of 2013.

A replacement who will serve the remaining two years of Baum's term will be chosen by voters in November.

The window for candidates is tight, though. Deadline to submit petitions to run for office to the Summit County Board of Elections is Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Anyone interested in applying for the interim job should submit a letter of qualifications, along with a petition signed by at least 25 registered voters of Ward 6 to Tonja K. Caldwell, Clerk of Council of City of Fairlawn, 3487 S. Smith Rd., Fairlawn, Ohio 44333 on or before 4 p.m. Thursday, August 15, 2013.

Sample petitions may be obtained from the clerk of council between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays at Fairlawn Municipal Building Offices, 3487 S. Smith Road, Fairlawn, Ohio or by email request to Caldwell@ci.fairlawn.oh.us.

If council doesn't act within 30 days, the mayor makes the appointment.
