John W, Hufgard, 59, of Bath, was sentenced Feb. 21 in US District Court.
On Feb. 21, John W. Hufgard was sentenced to 18 months in jail and fined $400,000 after pleading guilty to three counts of tax evasion in a federal court in November. Hufgard, 59, of Bath, was also sentenced to two years of supervised release by US District Judge Patricia A. Gaughan, according to Steven M. Dettelbach, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio. Hufgard, the sole proprietor of Universal Service and Repair Ltd., sold manufacturing racks to scrap metal dealers, but failed to report the proceeds on his federal income tax returns in 2007 through 2009, Dettelbach said. A Bath Township man pleaded guilty Monday to three counts of tax evasion for the years 2007, 2008 and 2009, said Steven Dettelbach, U.S. attorney for Ohio's northern district. John W. Hufgard, 59, evaded nearly $400,000, Dettelbach said. Hufgard, the sole proprietor of Universal Service and Repair Ltd., is accused of selling manufacturing racks to scrap metal dealers and failing to report the proceeds on his federal income tax returns, Dettelbach said. The man concealed the scheme by selling racks for cash, by depositing business income into his personal account, his business income was diverted to his personal account and by falsely recording business income as a short-term loan from himself, Dettelbach said.
