The plan to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market was tabled in November.
The proponents of a new McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market Street will not be at the December 13 Planning Commission meeting. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission on Nov. 8 and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base. However, representatives asked the plan to be tabled after several residents asked questions that couldn't be answered. Commission members told representatives they could return with a new plan in December. McDonald's representatives also tabled two variance requests that were on November's Board of Zoning Appeals agenda. Below are the articles written about the plan. What else would you like to know about …

McDonald's was on the Board of Zoning Appeals' agenda for Thursday, but now the topic will not be discussed.
The architects behind a new McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market Street have asked to table their variance requests on Thursday's Board of Zoning Appeals agenda. James Ptacek of Larsen Architects was asking for a 0.57-acre variance from the minimum lot size requirement of 1.5 acres and a 25-foot minimum parking set back variance to allow 6.8-foot from West Market and 7-foot from Shiawassee Avenue. Both variances were tabled at the request of Larsen Architects, according to the agenda, which is attached to the media portion of this article. Since they were tabled, McDonald's will not be discussed, said City Council President Russ Sharnsky. McDonald's representatives also asked to table a preliminary site plan for the …

Curious about the stack of police reports Susan Sullivan had at last week's Planning Commission meeting? We got 'em.
At the Nov. 6 Planning Commission meeting for a proposed McDonald's, Ward 5 Councilwoman Susan Sullivan pulled out a stack of police reports from the Montrose McDonald's location. An audible gasp came from the standing-room only crowd, and Sullivan said that "this will cause problems." "Problems exist there," she said, holding the stack of reports. "We don't need this." All of the reports were from the Bath Township Police Department, because the McDonald's technically sits in Bath Township. Her reports were over a span of two years. Fairlawn-Bath Patch requested a year's worth of reports from Bath police and here's what we found (see a copy of the reports in the media portion of this article): • There were 42 police calls between Nov. 9, …

Fifteen residents spoke against the proposal Thursday night.
The proposal to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street was tabled by the Fairlawn Planning Commission Thursday night. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base. Representative Gust Mecera promised non-invasive LED lighting, volume-controlled speakers and minimal trash on the property. "The building has a contemporary look," Mecera said. "It's a quality building that uses stone, metal and brick. We don't use any giant signs." Getting in and out of the proposed McDonald's from West Market Street would be a right-in and right-out only. Customers could also enter and …

Between 50 and 60 residents showed up to voice concerns about the proposal.
Representative Gust Mecera promised non-invasive lighting, volume controlled speakers and minimal trash on the property. But those promises didn't address what the standing-room only crowd thought of the plans. Fifteen residents, of the between 50 to 60 in the room, talked about traffic concerns, trash on the side streets, safety of area children and more. Check back with Fairlawn-Bath Patch tomorrow …

The corner of Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street has been vacant for years. What do you want to see built here?
This commercial property at Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street was once a gas station, according to Fairlawn Mayor William Roth. The property is still owned by Holland Oil, and just recently a buyer has expressed interested in it.. The old gas station components have since been cleared out and the land was remediated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency. Roth is keeping quiet about who the interested buyer is, and won't even say what industry they are in. So if he won't tell us, the question is, what do you want to see built on this corner? Tell us in the comments!
