Drunken Driving Checkpoint in Portage County Saturday Night

The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the checkpoint it announced earlier this week was will be in Portage County Saturday evening.  The exact location of the drunken driving checkpoint will be known Saturday morning.  The checkpoint is funded by federal grant funds and is planned to deter and intercept impaired drivers, according to a press release from the Ravenna post. "Based on provisional data, there were 452 OVI-related fatal crashes in which 494 people were killed last year in Ohio," Lt. Christopher Heverly, commander of the Ravenna Post, said in a prepared statement. "State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in an attempt to combat these dangerous drivers. Drunken Driving Checkpoint Planned This Week

The county where the checkpoint will be set up will not be announced until the day prior to the operation.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent out a press release Monday morning notifying the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week.   The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint.  "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement.  Additional support for the checkpoint will be provided by local law enforcement agencies. UPDATE: One Man Dead After Rollover Accident in Bath

The victim was Lawrence K. Turner.

Editor's Note: This article was updated at 8:18 a.m. on May 23 to include the deceased man's and the other driver's name. An Akron man is dead after his car collided with another around 5:30 p.m. on state Route 18 in Bath Township, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol Canton Post. Lawrence K. Turner was 53 years old. Patrol Sgt. John Thorne said Turner man was heading west on SR 18 when the other driver, Michael Borchert, 37, of Akron, attempted to make a left turn onto 18 from Hametown Road. The man hit the right rear end of the deceased man's car causing it to flip and come to rest upside down, Thorne said. Both men were driving pickup trucks. Borchert declined medical treatment. Agreed. Several residents of Bath including myself have been asking for a light @ at this location for years. It is an incredibly difficult place to turn out of and there is absolutely NO regard for speed with drivers coming West and East on 18. My heart breaks for all involved. Caution: Drunken Driving Checkpoint Friday, Here's Where it's Happening

Find out where in Portage County police will be conducting a sobriety checkpoint tonight until Saturday morning.

Brimfield Township, OH — This morning, the Ohio State Highway Patrol announced that a checkpoint will be set up on State Route 43 near milepost 9 in Brimfield Township. The checkpoint will be conducted from 10 p.m. tonight until 3 a.m. Saturday morning. The checkpoints are federally funded and local police departments assist in the operation. The purpose is to "deter and intercept impaired drivers," according to the OSHP. Sobriety Checkpoint Location on S.R. 59 Announced

The checkpoint will be set up from 10 p.m. April 14 until 2 a.m. April 15

The Ohio State Highway Patrol announced the drunk driving checkpoint in Portage County April 14 will be set up on State Route 59 in Kent near milepost 3. The checkpoint, funded by federal grants, will be conducted with the help of the Kent Police Department from 10 p.m. Saturday April 14 until 2 a.m. Sunday April 15.  "The checkpoint will also be held in conjunction with nearby saturation patrols to aggressively combat alcohol-related injury and fatal crashes," according to a press release.  The most recent checkpoint in Brimfield on St. Patrick's Day nabbed 17 drunk drivers.

The police are required by law to do it. I just don't like seeing media outlets & folks using social media to publicize these spots - it just makes it easier for drunks to avoid them & drive drunk elsewhere.   more ›

Nakia Hendrix, commander of the Ravenna Post, said. “State troopers make on average 25,000 OVI arrests each year in combating these dangerous drivers. OVI checkpoints are designed to not only deter impaired driving, but to proactively remove these dangerous drivers from our roadways.” The latest checkpoint was in Portage County in Brimfield on St. Patrick's Day. Officers arrested 17 for drunk driving.
