McDonald's Variance Requests Tabled by Restaurant Architects

McDonald's was on the Board of Zoning Appeals' agenda for Thursday, but now the topic will not be discussed.

The architects behind a new McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market Street have asked to table their variance requests on Thursday's Board of Zoning Appeals agenda. James Ptacek of Larsen Architects was asking for a 0.57-acre variance from the minimum lot size requirement of 1.5 acres and a 25-foot minimum parking set back variance to allow 6.8-foot from West Market and 7-foot from Shiawassee Avenue. Both variances were tabled at the request of Larsen Architects, according to the agenda, which is attached to the media portion of this article. New McDonald's Proposal Tabled by Fairlawn Planning Commission

Fifteen residents spoke against the proposal Thursday night.

The proposal to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street was tabled by the Fairlawn Planning Commission Thursday night. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base.  Representative Gust Mecera promised non-invasive LED lighting, volume-controlled speakers and minimal trash on the property. "The building has a contemporary look," Mecera said. "It's a quality building that uses stone, metal and brick. We don't use any giant signs." Shiawassee McDonald's Proposal Tabled by Planning Commission

Between 50 and 60 residents showed up to voice concerns about the proposal.

The proposal to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street was tabled by the Fairlawn Planning Commission Thursday night. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base.  Representative Gust Mecera promised non-invasive lighting, volume controlled speakers and minimal trash on the property. But those promises didn't address what the standing-room only crowd thought of the plans.
