A man went to police May 1 after a dog bite required seven stitches. The victim told police he was walking on the trail behind St. Edward nursing home April 30 when he encountered a man walking two dogs. He said the asked the dog owner if the rottweiler was friendly, and the owner said he was. The man reached to pet the pup, who bit the palm of his hand. The owner offered to pay the hospital bill, but the victim said at the time, he was more concerned about getting his hand treated than who would pay for it. But he became concerned afterward about whether the dog had had all his shots. Police said they would try to locate the dog owner. A man who was banned from Summit Mall for two years got an extra year tacked on to his exile when he showed up again -- the same day he was banned for shoplifting and leading police on a foot chase. A report said the man, 20, was apparently trying to remove an anti-theft sensor from an item in Hollister May 1 when he was approached by an employee. The man fled, running out a door, then back through the mall and into a nearby neighborhood. He was seen running through a back yard on Elia Circle and eventually found hiding in some bushes on Blue Hill Lane. Fairlawn police arrested an employee at Walmart April 19 after he was caught allegedly ringing up gift cards, then pocketing the cards without putting any cash in the register. A report said store security started reviewing surveillance video after the man's cash drawer came up $560 short April 16 and $505 short the next day. A report said the tape showed the employee ringing up gift cards, but not placing money in the cash drawer. By the time they interviewed the man, another two gift cards totalling $1,011 were missing, the report said. The man admitted to the thefts, and also said he had stolen about $20 in food two weeks earlier, bringing the total loss to $2,097. He was charged with theft.

A man has hit both two Giant Eagle stores in Fairlawn with a scam that allowed him to walk out with multiple cases of free beer. The store at 2275 West Market St. called police April 16 to report that a man had conned employees there April 12. According to the report, the man identified himself to the manager as a Tramonte Distributing employee who had come to inventory the shelves for outdated beer. He went into the cooler and loaded six cases of Miller Lite, plus a six-pack of Miller Lite, into a shopping cart, then wheeled it out to his car and left. The manager realized it was a scam when the other Giant Eagle store, 3750 West Market St., called on April 15 to say they had been hit and warn them of the scam. At that store, a man …

On Jan. 26, a Sam's Club clerk rang up an order for $151 and the customer paid with two gift cards, according to a Fairlawn police report. Each gift card was worth $100 and one gift card had $48 left on it when the transaction was done. Instead of giving that gift card back to the customer, the clerk kept it and gave the customer the empty one, the report stated. The customer later noticed they had the empty card and reported it to the store. After investigating and watching video, Sam's Club security saw the clerk take the card and use it next door at Walmart. The employee, 19, of Akron, admitted she stole the card and used it. Police charged her with theft.

On Jan. 21, the manager of Chuck E. Cheese called police to report someone parked outside the exit smoking weed in their car, according to a Fairlawn police report. When the officer arrived, he walked up to the car and stated he could smell marijuana smoke coming out, the report stated. The officer asked the woman inside, 30, of Akron, if she was smoking weed and she turned over a half burnt marijuana cigar. Then she gave officers a false name and age, the report stated. When police finally figured out who she was, the officer charged her with drug possession and providing a fake name.

On Jan. 8, Walmart security called Fairlawn police about a Wadsworth man who was caught stealing merchandise, a report stated. Security saw Samuel D. Page, 38, of Wadsworth, take $63 of merchandise off the shelf, go into the men's restroom, walk out and walk out of the store without paying, the report stated. The guard caught him before he got away. When police arrived, they discovered Page had warrants through the Summit and Portage County Sheriff's Departments and the Wadsworth Police Department. When police searched Page, they found keys to a PT Cruiser that had been reported stolen from Wadsworth. In the car, they found two syringes — one loaded with heroin, the report stated. On Jan. 3, a 30-year-old Copley man stole two TVs from a display in Walmart, according to a Fairlawn police report. The man grabbed two 40-inch TVs, put them in his cart, removed the sensors and headed toward the front of the store, the report reads. When security stopped the man at the doors, he pushed the cart away, ran to his car and drove away ... but not very far. Police found the man's car behind the Fidelity building and promptly charged him with theft, the report stated. The two TVs were valued at $836.

On Dec. 28, employees in Summit Mall's Express store saw a woman who was previously banned in 2009 shopping around, according to a Fairlawn police report. The 21-year-old Akron woman was approached by mall security and the officer saw stolen clothing sticking out from under her clothes, the report stated. The woman had managed to stuff $501 of clothes under hers. Police charged the woman with theft and criminal trespass. She was taken to the Summit County Jail and banned from Summit Mall, the report stated.

The closest I have ever seen marijuana come to harming anyone was during an air drop. We brought in 1100 pounds from Jamaica and dropped it in a peanut field in middle Georgia. The bales were dropped from a small plane at 125 feet altitude. One of the bales, about 80 pounds, missed my compadre by only a few feet... but it surely messed up his truck.
