On Jan. 26, the security guard at Target watched a 48-year-old Akron woman puruse the Electronics Department before making her way to the video games, according to a Fairlawn police report. The woman pulled 23 different games off the shelf and began stuffing them in her handbag, the report stated. The woman headed toward the exit and began to walk out when she was stopped by security. She had $454 of games in her bag. Police charged the woman with theft and she was banned from Target for one year.

On Jan. 26, a Sam's Club clerk rang up an order for $151 and the customer paid with two gift cards, according to a Fairlawn police report. Each gift card was worth $100 and one gift card had $48 left on it when the transaction was done. Instead of giving that gift card back to the customer, the clerk kept it and gave the customer the empty one, the report stated. The customer later noticed they had the empty card and reported it to the store. After investigating and watching video, Sam's Club security saw the clerk take the card and use it next door at Walmart. The employee, 19, of Akron, admitted she stole the card and used it. Police charged her with theft.

What started as a simple traffic violation turned into something more for a 17-year-old Copley boy. On Jan. 19, Bath police pulled over a car heading west on Smith Road for not having a back license plate light, a report stated. When the officer approached the car, he reported he could smell marijuana. A search of the car found 1 ounce of marijuana hidden under the driver's seat, the report stated. The 17-year-old driver admitted it was his. Police charged the teen with drug abuse and he was also cited for the equipment violation, the report stated. The boy was released to his father.

On Jan. 21, the manager of Chuck E. Cheese called police to report someone parked outside the exit smoking weed in their car, according to a Fairlawn police report. When the officer arrived, he walked up to the car and stated he could smell marijuana smoke coming out, the report stated. The officer asked the woman inside, 30, of Akron, if she was smoking weed and she turned over a half burnt marijuana cigar. Then she gave officers a false name and age, the report stated. When police finally figured out who she was, the officer charged her with drug possession and providing a fake name.

On Jan. 8, Walmart security called Fairlawn police about a Wadsworth man who was caught stealing merchandise, a report stated. Security saw Samuel D. Page, 38, of Wadsworth, take $63 of merchandise off the shelf, go into the men's restroom, walk out and walk out of the store without paying, the report stated. The guard caught him before he got away. When police arrived, they discovered Page had warrants through the Summit and Portage County Sheriff's Departments and the Wadsworth Police Department. When police searched Page, they found keys to a PT Cruiser that had been reported stolen from Wadsworth. In the car, they found two syringes — one loaded with heroin, the report stated. Mayor William Roth delivered his State of the City address at Monday's Chamber of Commerce Luncheon.
The crime rate in Fairlawn is slowly dropping, according to Fairlawn Mayor William Roth. At Monday's Chamber of Commerce Luncheon, Roth delivered his State of the City address and stated 91 percent of crime in the city is theft/shoplifting. However, the number of juvenile crimes dropped 29 percent from 2011 and the number of drug-related crimes dropped 49 percent. The number of calls coming into the police department also dropped by 8 percent, Roth said. The department received 60,582 calls, and those range from something as simple as locking keys in the car to crimes. Car accidents went up 8 percent in 2012. In the Detective Bureau, investigators worked on 82 felony cases and had a 62 percent solve rate, Roth said. That's up from a 55 …

On Jan. 12, T.J. Maxx security watched three girls walk into the store and start shopping, according to a Bath Township police report. Security saw one 16-year-old pick up two sets of bracelets and put them in her purse. The girl and her friends began to walk out of the store, but security stopped the 16-year-old, the report said. The girl gave security the two bracelets plus one she wore out of the store. They were valued at $58. Police charged the girl with delinquency by means of theft and she was released to her uncle. The girl's friends are not suspected of theft.

On Jan. 3, a 30-year-old Copley man stole two TVs from a display in Walmart, according to a Fairlawn police report. The man grabbed two 40-inch TVs, put them in his cart, removed the sensors and headed toward the front of the store, the report reads. When security stopped the man at the doors, he pushed the cart away, ran to his car and drove away ... but not very far. Police found the man's car behind the Fidelity building and promptly charged him with theft, the report stated. The two TVs were valued at $836.

An Olmsted Falls woman drove her aunt's car to Summit Mall on on Dec. 12, and came out to find her driver's side rear window cracked, according to a Fairlawn police report. When the woman went out at 3:45 p.m., her car was fine, but when she came back out at 10:30 p.m., she saw someone shot the window using either a BB or pellet gun, the report stated. The window was spidered in several places, but it had not busted out. Someone also spit on the woman's window, the report stated. There are no suspects, and police are investigating. The window is valued at $100.
