On Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m., a Macy's clerk watched a suspected thief walk out of the men's fitting room with one pair of jeans after walking in with two. The clerk quickly canvassed the fitting room, finding only a torn off price tag, according to the Fairlawn police report. As the man tried to leave the store, she confronted him, and, during a brief struggle, he reportedly punched her in the chest. He then fled to the parking lot and sped off in a red Kia Spectra. Five Fairlawn police cruisers were dispatched to the scene, but were unable to locate the man. The incident is under investigation.

On Feb. 4, a security guard stopped a woman from stealing a pair of jeans at The Buckle in Summit Mall. The thief reportedly placed the jeans into her purse, which was lined with cardboard and duct tape. According to Fairlawn police, the criminal tool, otherwise known as a "booster bag," is used by shoplifters to slip past alarm systems without triggering them. Officers arrived on scene, temporarily detained the woman and cited her for theft and possession of criminal tools, both first-degree misdemeanors. A less cunning thief was reportedly arrested at The Buckle on Feb. 2 after she walked into the fitting room and walked out wearing a new pair of jeans. She tripped the alarm system while fleeing the store and was snagged by security. …

Bath police arrested Michael J. Agresta on Sunday.
Michael J. Agresta, 40, of Highland Heights, was arrested in Bath over the weekend after allegedly conning several area gas stations out of hundreds of dollars. According to Bath Township Police Chief Michael McNeely, Agresta would pull up to gas stations in a snowplow truck, show fake invoices to clerks and demand payment for work he never completed. When Agresta attempted the scam at a True North Shell station on Sunday evening, the attendant grew suspicious and alerted Bath poilce. Agresta was charged with attempted theft, a second-degree misdemeanor, and was handed over to Solon police, which had issued a warrant for his arrest on Jan. 30. On Jan. 26, the security guard at Target watched a 48-year-old Akron woman puruse the Electronics Department before making her way to the video games, according to a Fairlawn police report. The woman pulled 23 different games off the shelf and began stuffing them in her handbag, the report stated. The woman headed toward the exit and began to walk out when she was stopped by security. She had $454 of games in her bag. Police charged the woman with theft and she was banned from Target for one year.

On Jan. 26, a Sam's Club clerk rang up an order for $151 and the customer paid with two gift cards, according to a Fairlawn police report. Each gift card was worth $100 and one gift card had $48 left on it when the transaction was done. Instead of giving that gift card back to the customer, the clerk kept it and gave the customer the empty one, the report stated. The customer later noticed they had the empty card and reported it to the store. After investigating and watching video, Sam's Club security saw the clerk take the card and use it next door at Walmart. The employee, 19, of Akron, admitted she stole the card and used it. Police charged her with theft.

Cheese in Fairlawn called police to report someone parked outside the exit smoking weed in their car. When the officer arrived, he walked up to the car and stated he could smell marijuana smoke coming out. On Jan. 8, Walmart security called Fairlawn police about a Wadsworth man who was caught stealing merchandise, a report stated. Security saw Samuel D. Page, 38, of Wadsworth, take $63 of merchandise off the shelf, go into the men's restroom, walk out and walk out of the store without paying, the report stated. The guard caught him before he got away. When police arrived, they discovered Page had warrants through the Summit and Portage County Sheriff's Departments and the Wadsworth Police Department. When police searched Page, they found keys to a PT Cruiser that had been reported stolen from Wadsworth. In the car, they found two syringes — one loaded with heroin, the report stated. On Jan. 12, T.J. Maxx security watched three girls walk into the store and start shopping, according to a Bath Township police report. Security saw one 16-year-old pick up two sets of bracelets and put them in her purse. The girl and her friends began to walk out of the store, but security stopped the 16-year-old, the report said. The girl gave security the two bracelets plus one she wore out of the store. They were valued at $58. Police charged the girl with delinquency by means of theft and she was released to her uncle. The girl's friends are not suspected of theft.

On Jan. 3, a 30-year-old Copley man stole two TVs from a display in Walmart, according to a Fairlawn police report. The man grabbed two 40-inch TVs, put them in his cart, removed the sensors and headed toward the front of the store, the report reads. When security stopped the man at the doors, he pushed the cart away, ran to his car and drove away ... but not very far. Police found the man's car behind the Fidelity building and promptly charged him with theft, the report stated. The two TVs were valued at $836.
