Five students were recognized by the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education for their standout academic achievements in February.
At its March 19 meeting, the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education recognized five students for their academic excellence in February. Here are the students of the month: The Board also named Madison Myers, of Copley High School, athlete of the month.

National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6, is a big day for many student-athletes, and we would love for you to share their accomplishments on Fairlawn-Bath Patch. For some high school senior athletes, it's a day they make their college plans official. It's something to take pride in, and we would love to help parents, coaches and athletic directors spread the word. Jason Tretter played offensive tackle with the Revere Minutemen.
Former Revere Minutemen football Coach Phil Heyn has announced that senior offensive tackle Jason Tretter will sign on with Purdue University on signing day. Tretter has been offered an athletic scholarship that accepted, passing on other offers from Kent State University and Toledo. Heyn said Tretter was also garnering attention from schools such as Virginia and Duke, as well as Harvard and Yale. Tretter was named 2nd Team All-Ohio this year as well as his sophomore year. Unfortunately Tretter missed all of his junior year after suffering a knee injury. Signing Day is Feb. 6. Congratulations, Jason!

In sports today it's become one of the most widely reported and analyzed injuries: the concussion. Injuries to the brain don't just happen to NFL players. High school athletes on the volleyball court to the lacrosse field can experience a concussion. Journalism students in Kent State University's computer-assisted reporting class recently surveyed high schools around Ohio to find out if the schools track concussions, whether there is a formal policy in place for dealing with concussions and if the school trains coaches on how to deal with the injury. In Kent, at Theodore Roosevelt High School athletic administrators have a policy in place for handling concussions. The school also tracks concussion injuries and provides training for …

Owner Jim Armington says Sun Valley Sports is the most extensive skate shop in the Akron area. The shop has been selling skateboards, longboards and accessories at the location for about four years, he said. Armington added the product line at the suggestion of an employee who was an avid skateboarder and it has done well for the store, he said.
