Fairlawn School Officials Recognize Students of the Month

Five students were recognized by the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education for their standout academic achievements in February.

At its March 19 meeting, the Copley-Fairlawn Board of Education recognized five students for their academic excellence in February. Here are the students of the month: The Board also named Madison Myers, of Copley High School, athlete of the month.

Share Your Signing Day News on Fairlawn-Bath Patch

National Signing Day on Wednesday, Feb. 6, is a big day for many student-athletes, and we would love for you to share their accomplishments on Fairlawn-Bath Patch. For some high school senior athletes, it's a day they make their college plans official. It's something to take pride in, and we would love to help parents, coaches and athletic directors spread the word. Revere Football's Jason Tretter Accepts Offer From Purdue University

Jason Tretter played offensive tackle with the Revere Minutemen.

Former Revere Minutemen football Coach Phil Heyn has announced that senior offensive tackle Jason Tretter will sign on with Purdue University on signing day. Tretter has been offered an athletic scholarship that accepted, passing on other offers from Kent State University and Toledo. Heyn said Tretter was also garnering attention from schools such as Virginia and Duke, as well as Harvard and Yale. Tretter was named 2nd Team All-Ohio this year as well as his sophomore year. Unfortunately Tretter missed all of his junior year after suffering a knee injury. Signing Day is Feb. 6.  Congratulations, Jason!

Concussions and High School Sports: How Schools Handle Your Student's Health

Kent State University student journalists survey Ohio high schools on concussion policies, reporting and tracking

In sports today it's become one of the most widely reported and analyzed injuries: the concussion. Injuries to the brain don't just happen to NFL players. High school athletes on the volleyball court to the lacrosse field can experience a concussion. Journalism students in Kent State University's computer-assisted reporting class recently surveyed high schools around Ohio to find out if the schools track concussions, whether there is a formal policy in place for dealing with concussions and if the school trains coaches on how to deal with the injury. Sun Valley Sports serves snowboarders in winter, skateboarders in summer

Montrose Centre store switches business focus with turn of the seasons.

*Originally published April 2011. In winter, it’s a successful snow sports shop, but in spring and summer, skiing and snowboarding take a backseat to skateboarding at Sun Valley Sports. Owner Jim Armington says Sun Valley Sports is the most extensive skate shop in the Akron area. The shop has been selling skateboards, longboards and accessories at the location for about four years, he said. Armington added the product line at the suggestion of an employee who was an avid skateboarder and it has done well for the store, he said. Sun Valley Sports sells components that allow riders to customize their skateboards.
