Black Friday a Little Less Crazy than Usual

There was a midnight rush at Best Buy, but longer hours have stretched out crowds a bit.

The weather outside was not frightful, and for the most part neither was the shopping early Friday. A tour of Fairlawn, Cuyahoga Falls and Stow between 7 and 9 a.m. Friday morning found malls and shopping area busy but not overwhelmed by a crushing sea of humanity and cars. Sherry McCrossin of Cuyahoga Falls, on her second tour of duty Friday morning, said the midnight crowd at Best Buy, 445 Howe Ave., was "crazy." Later in the morning, about 8:30, the traffic was light and the parking lot about half full. By 8 a.m. Friday, the tent city that had sprouted outside the Best Buy was gone.  The Target and Kohl's stores on Kent Road in Stow were steady but sane at about 8 Friday morning. Summit Mall in Fairlawn was much the same at 7:30: Busy …

Happy Campers Wait for Black Friday

Best Buy in Cuyhoga Falls has a little tent city springing up, undeterred by rain and wind.

Those tents on the sidewalk in front of Best Buy, 445 Howe Ave., aren't a display for summer camping fun. Those are actual campers waiting for the arrival of Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, the traditional kickoff to Christmas shopping season. Generators hummed and the wind whipped the tents as I talked to one of the campers hunkered down on a blustery Wednesday afternoon.   Jonas Allooh has been a Black Friday camper for a couple of years now. His friends started even longer ago, so maybe they're creating a new holiday tradition of sorts.  I cruised over to Fairlawn and Bath to see if any similar camps were springing up, but there were none as of Wednesday afternoon. Maybe they're just not as motivated for early bird bargains.  …

Neighbors You Should Know

Get to Know: David Huesser

Summit Mall manager David Huesser is committed to the mall as a community hub, and he's looking to bring in local stores.

Being a mall manager doesn’t mean David Huesser gets a discount to every store. But he loves his job anyway. Huesser, a native of New Jersey, has been the manager of Summit Mall for two years. He moved to Fairlawn shortly after the front of the mall was remodeled. Before working in Fairlawn he managed malls in Illinois, North Carolina and Toronto, Canada. “Malls are where the hub of action is in a community,” Huesser said. “Each retailer understands their obligation to the community as a whole.” Huesser’s job is to oversee the day-to-day operations and staff of the shopping center. He also has the responsibility of finding new stores for the mall. “I love talking to people about their businesses,” Huesser said. “Who doesn’t love talking …
