Our Republican Insiders say last year's fight over collective bargaining rights could hurt the party's chances at winning Ohio's electoral votes in this November's presidential election.
Will the Republican-led effort to limit collective bargaining rights for government workers in Ohio hurt the GOP's chances in this year's presidential election? More than half of the Republican insiders surveyed by Patch say it's too soon to tell or that they didn't know. But 14 out of 50 of those surveyed think the Senate Bill 5 / Issue 2 effort, led by Republican Gov. John Kasich, will hurt the GOP's chances in Ohio. Only four of 50 responders believe the fight will help the Republicans. Issue 2's effect is also seen in what Ohioans our Republican insiders would like to see as a running mate to Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Northeast Ohio Republican insiders say if Mitt Romney picks a running mate from this important swing state, it should be Sen. Rob Portman, according to results from Patch's first Red Northeast Ohio survey. While a majority of the survey respondents, made up of local elected officials, GOP party leaders and activists, said they were not sure if Romney should pick an Ohioan for his vice presidential candidate, Portman was the clear preference. Only 18 of 50 respondents said they wanted Romney to select a vice presidential candidate from Ohio, with 23 saying they were not sure. But 33 of the 50 insiders surveyed said Portman was the best choice if Romney wanted an Ohioan. Only one person surveyed said Romney should choose Gov. John Kasich, …

Patch wants to know what Republican and Democratic insiders in Northeast Ohio are thinking during this important election season. So we're going to ask them! Patch will be conducting Red Northeast Ohio and Blue Northeast Ohio surveys throughout the election season in hopes of determining the true sentiments of Republicans and Democrats on the ground in Ohio. The feature is intended to gather opinion and insight from influential local Democratic and Republican activists, party leaders and elected officials in Northeast Ohio. The surveys aren't random.
