Revere Superintendent to Deliver State of the District Tonight

Superintendent Randy Boroff and Treasurer Dave Forrest will talk about where the district is headed.

Revere Superintendent Randy Boroff and district Treasurer Dave Forrest will host a community meeting at tonight at 7 in the high school auditorium. To make time for the meeting, the district's regular board of education meeting has been pushed to 5 p.m. District spokeswoman Cathy Harbinak said Boroff will discuss the district's five-year strategic plan and the programs it created. He will also discuss the status of education in Ohio, common core standards and new state assessments. Forrest will discuss the district's five-year financial forecast, Harbinak said. Because the presidential debate starts at 9 p.m. tomorrow, administration will try to keep the presentation brief and there will not be time for questions or answers. "When we …

Revere Board of Education OKs Extended Days for Counselors, Librarians

Board hires intervention specialist for Hillcrest Elementary School, goes into executive session.

The Revere Board of Education spent about 10 minutes deliberating the merits of extending days in the 2011-2012 school year for certified and licensed staff, particularly counselors and librarians, before deciding in a 3-1 vote to approve Superintendent Randy Boroff’s recommendations. George Seifert voted against the measure. William Hoover was absent. The recommendations by Boroff were meant to offset some of the time cut out of the 2010-2011 budget for the staff to process transcripts and other information that extends beyond the regular school year. Seifert pressed for justification to extend the days. “At the high school level you have college applications going out, you have transcripts that have to go out, you have scheduling …

Revere Board Imposes Previous Contract on Teachers

Union president says that contract was rescinded, isn’t valid. District may be in litigation as school board members run to keep their seats in November.

In a decision likely to be challenged in court, the Revere Local Schools Board of Education on Tuesday imposed a contract agreement with teachers that had been reached before the May 3 levy passed, but was apparently rescinded because funding for the contract did not yet exist.  “Our contention is that we rescinded it before that 30 days was up and their contention as that we did not and therefore it’s been imposed,” said Revere Education Association President Paul Fisher. “Last night they went ahead and approved that at the special board meeting and I spoke out against that.” The board vote was 4-1, with Claudia Hower voting against the measure. Bill Hoover, George Seifert, Mario Bonacci and Joe Forcina voted in favor of imposing the …

Revere High School 2011 Commencement

Minutemen graduate 243 at at Akron Civic Theatre.

Revere High School honored its 243 graduates in the Class of 2011 in the ornate Akron Civic Theatre. Eric Tretter was class valedictorian and co-salutatorians were John Ahlborg and Robert Zhang. Graduate Vincent Paparella, who plans on studying computer engineering at Case Western University, said he was going to miss having all his friends in the same building, but was looking forward to making new friends in college, as well as keeping in touch his high school pals. Paparella, who was in choir and started the debate team his sophomore year, said Revere was a great experience for him. “I had some wonderful teachers, made some really great friends and I just had a really good time,” he said. Graduate Sarah Laferty, who is planning on …

Revere Levy Passes on Third Try

School operating levy prevails in close contest. Anti levy group still wants new members on school board in November.

Musketeers Bar & Grill in Richfield was filled with members of the Revere school community and pro-levy group Families and Community Together for Schools. Their voices drowned out the music and people huddled around computers and phones as election results were updated on-line or text-messaged in by other members. A cheer went up after the unofficial result showed that, on the third try in a year, the school property tax levy had passed. “We got this one!” Dave Gifford, president of F.A.C.T.S, told supporters. Hugs were exchanged and chants of “We are Revere!” filled the room. The election result will garner the district more than $4.7 million a year in funds. The Summit County Board of Election website confirmed the vote, including …

Revere School Levy Vote is Tuesday

Tax levy issue comes to vote third time, fourth planned if effort fails.

Months of work by people both for and against a new tax levy to raise funds for Revere Local Schools will culminate Tuesday when voters go to the polls to decide the issue for a third time. Mailings and advertisements in the past week have advocated the merits for and against the tax increase. About 800 pro-levy yard signs have been planted around the community, according to superintendent Randy Boroff. The levy would raise an additional $4,763,000 a year for the district. Larry Chlebina, treasurer for the anti-levy group Citizens for Responsible School Administration, has charged the district with improperly managing its financial assets, calling the district’s financials “disingenuous.” Chlebina also wants to replace members of the …

I find it interesting that when I research "Mobocracy", Wikipedia returns: Ochlocracy (Greek: οχλοκρατία or okhlokratía; Latin: ochlocratia) or mob rule is government by mob or a mass of people, or the intimidation of legitimate authorities. Ochlocracy, the correct word, would not have the same emotional impact as "mobocracy". Funding decisions for our schools should NOT be based on emotion, but …   more ›

Revere Levy Looms

District trying to pass tax increase for third time.

A familiar question is hanging over the Revere Local Schools community and the residents who pay property taxes. On May 3, they will decide, again, whether or not to pass a tax levy for additional funds to the school district, a 10-year, 4.83 mill emergency operating levy that would raise about $4,763,000 a year. Opponents of the tax increase have charged the district with poor financial management and want to bring new members to the school board. Superintendent Randy Boroff said a tax levy  is the only way for a district to increase revenue. If the levy fails, the district will have to reduce personnel, programs and services. “It will impact every aspect of the school district,” he said. The district already has made plans to lay off 34 …

Revere Schools Forum Paints Dire Financial Picture

Administrators say school funding cuts make levy passage crucial and require pushback from parents against state legislators.

Whose financial numbers do you believe? Should a nest egg be spent now or will it be needed when bad times get worse? Those were the central issues debated at Revere Schools Community Forum Tuesday.  The get-together was one of many expected to be held at schools and governments across the state (Copley-Fairlawn Schools holds its meeting tonight at 7:30 p.m.) The meetings  are held to urge voters to object to cuts proposed by Ohio Gov. John Kasich. The governor has submitted a biennial budget to legislators that makes substantial reductions in state funding to schools and municipalities to close a budget hole of more than $8 billion. During the Revere meeting,  Superintendent Randy Boroff posted contact information for State Sen. Frank …

Revere School Officials Make Pitch for Levy

Superintendent says district has made every cut it can.

For the first time in more than a year, Revere Schools Superintendent Randy Boroff has no organized opposition to his campaign to pass a levy. Maybe that's why Boroff seemed pretty comfortable delivering this straightforward assessment of his school's financial situation before a small crowd in the large high school auditorium.  "We can't do it any other way but through excess taxes." The "it" Boroff is talking about is keeping the Revere School District running with passage of a renewal levy on the Feb. 8 ballot that will generate $4.56 million annually. The renewal would cost residents $128.27 a year for every $100,000 of property value. It's a compromise measure that  -- even if passed -- will leave the schools with a $1.4 million …
