Action & Reaction: Revere Middle Students Pay it Forward

Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Revere Middle School were in Montrose, Fairlawn and Wadsworth Saturday surprising people by paying for random purchases.

If you saw groups of kids wearing bright pink, blue and green shirts walking around Fairlawn, Montrose or Wadsworth Saturday, you saw goodness in action. The Rachel's Challenge Group is made up of sixth, seventh and eighth grade Revere Middle School students. They went into various stores and gas stations and offered to pay for random people's supplies, groceries and gas.  Attention, chaperones: I know you took a lot of pictures Saturday! Please share them with us by clicking the "Upload photos & video" button above! Thanks! In its second year at Revere Middle School, the Rachel's Challenge group is inspired by Rachel Scott, the first victim in the 1999 Columbine school shooting. Revere Middle School Students to Pay It Forward

Sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Revere Middle School will be in Montrose, Fairlawn and Wadsworth today surprising people by paying it forward.

If you see a bunch of kids running around town today, they aren't looking to cause trouble... quite the opposite actually. A group of sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from Revere Middle School will be out in Montrose, Fairlawn and Wadsworth paying it forward to unsuspecting consumers, and encouraging them to do the same. In its second year at Revere Middle School, Rachel's Challenge, also known as paying it forward, is inspired by Rachel Scott, the first victim in the 1999 Columbine school shooting. Her acts of kindness and compassion have become the foundation for one of the most life-changing school programs in the nation. As part of the challenge, the students will be paying for a tank of gas, groceries, cups of coffee, movie …

How do you teach a child kindness and compassion? When children are young most parents try to teach them to say “please” and “thank you.”  They also try to teach them to be nice to others.  But as with all lessons, the best ones are taught by example.  I was shocked recently when a clerk at the deli counter remarked how polite I was -- I asked for my order with a "please" and "thank you."  I said that everyone should be or they shouldn’t be served. He said that most people wouldn’t be served if (courtesy) was required.  Interacting with others in a polite manner shows kindness and respect, something we need to demonstrate to our kids.  If they witness us being kind, they learn the expected way of acting, just as they learn that if we are …

Students and Parents Urged to Practice Compassion

Assembly inspired by the first Columbine High School shootings victim designed to teach students to create a "chain reaction of kindness."

The images are still terrifying. A small white casket is shown nearly covered in the thick black scrawl of teenage grief. In one frame a photo of a petite, dark-haired smiling young woman dissolves to show a journal decorated with hand-sketched flowers and girlie doodles. It takes a second to notice the large bullet hole in one corner of the book. A security camera shows a hall packed with Columbine High School students. They seem to roil as one panicked wave. A woman's voice on a 9-1-1 tape shouts, "Students, get down! Get under the tables." On Wednesday night, an audience of about 150 parents and children sat at Revere Middle School and watched a presentation called Rachel's Challenge in rapt silence, even though they knew how the events…
