Momtalk: Kindness and Compassion
Lessons worth teaching your children.
How do you teach a child kindness and compassion? When children are young most parents try to teach them to say “please” and “thank you.” They also try to teach them to be nice to others. But as with all lessons, the best ones are taught by example. I was shocked recently when a clerk at the deli counter remarked how polite I was -- I asked for my order with a "please" and "thank you." I said that everyone should be or they shouldn’t be served. He said that most people wouldn’t be served if (courtesy) was required. Interacting with others in a polite manner shows kindness and respect, something we need to demonstrate to our kids.
