Happy New Year from Patch!

It's a new year, and time for new resolutions

Happy New Year! Can you believe it's already 2012? With each new year, many of us out there make new resolutions. Some may argue that you don't need a certain day of the year to decide to make a change, but what better day than today? It's a fresh start right? We want to know what your resolution(s) is/are. Did you decide that it's time to join a gym? Maybe you want to try a new food? Or maybe you want to stay in contact with your family better? Whatever it is, we want to know, so please share with us in the comments section. In the meantime, here are what some of us Patch editors resolved: Megan Rozsa, associate local editor: "I want to start believing in myself more. I'm my own biggest critic and I need to quit sweating the small stuff…

Deck Your House and Win $100,000 for Your Local School District

Get out the lights and holly. Your holiday decorating could net big bucks for education.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to win a $100,000 gift to the Copley-Fairlawn or Revere school districts. Patch.com is launching a nationwide contest to find the best-dressed home in its Patch communities. The winner’s school district will receive $100,000, no strings attached. Here’s how the contest works: Beginning Dec. 8 and continuing through Dec. 26, you can nominate your home by uploading a photo to the contest entry form on the site. During that same time period you and your neighbors also will be able to vote for your favorite festive home. The winning entry will be forwarded to a national Patch judge, who will select 24 finalists. Each finalist will receive $500 that they can apply to their December electric bill. From Dec. 30 …

Holiday Recipe Rescue Part 4: Let's Party!

Having a Christmas party? Don't stress over what to make to keep the guests twinkling all night long. Try our easy and fabulously tasty party appetizers.

Ah, the Christmas season. At no other time in the course of a year does humanity revel as one in the same epic state of emotion. Now granted, this emotion is not always for the better. In the midst of our revelry lies a lot of stress. The human being is never under more pressure to succeed as a consumer than at this time of year. My advice, for what it’s worth, don’t let the right gift, the right price and the right outfit define you this year. Let the season be what it is intended to be, whether you are religious or not. This time of year is magical. I know this because I have children and see simple wonder in their eyes while looking at the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree. It is not only about Santa and presents for them. I know …

Poll: Should Stores Be Open on Thanksgiving?

Target employee starts petition effort on Change.org.

More than 187,000 have signed a petition started by a Nebraska Target employee on Change.org to "save Thanksgiving" by having Black Friday sales start at 5 a.m. rather than at midnight. Anthony Hardwick said a midnight opening robs employees of time off with their families on Thanksgiving. That started 26 other campaigns on Change.org to get Kohl's, Best Buy, Macy's and other stores to change their midnight openings, said Benjamin Joffe-Walt, director of communications for Change.org. What do you think? Take our poll – you can also explain your vote with a message in the "comments" box.

Could you add a page with holiday craft fairs that are on the west side, especially if there are any in Avon Lake? I seem to remember one at the high school the past few years. Thanks!   more ›
