Winning Isn’t Everything To Revere Coach

Head Minuteman Dean Rahas teaches hard work, team character en route to a 5-1 record.

Revere boys' basketball coach Dean Rahas doesn’t like to lose, but winning isn’t everything to Rahas. He’s been a coach long enough to know that valuable lessons can be learned when his student-athletes face adversity. Character is built when you win -- and lose. Team chemistry is built when you win -- and lose. Humility and hard work are built when you win -- and lose. Not buying it? Take Revere’s second game of the season. The Minutemen lost by five points to Jackson. Revere was in the game, but couldn’t rally in the end. In Rahas’ eyes, it was a good loss. He didn’t fault his players’ effort. He didn’t lay blame. It was a loss that had substance. "It was a good game to have early on,’’ Rahas said. "It really motivated us and our kids …

Minuteman Q&A: Revere's D.J. Bettinger

Senior point guard strives to always give his all

Fairlawn-Bath Patch: What was the biggest moment of your basketball career so far? D.J. Bettinger: When our team won the AAU Division II national championship in Memphis going into my eighth-grade year. We made a great run in the tournament to win it all. Patch: What is something that people really don’t know about you? DJB: I definitely want people to know I love Jesus Christ. For me, that’s above all else. Patch: Do you have any brothers who play basketball? DJB: I have four sisters and they are great. They are awesome. I’ve learned patience and respect from them -- an old-school gentleman kind of deal. Patch: What is your career goal in life? DJB: I just always want to give it my all in whatever I do, whether it’s playing basketball or …

Copley Basketball's Go-to Guy

Jordan Burke works hard at being good

A lot is riding on Jordan Burke's slender shoulders. OK, maybe not so much when you really consider Copley coach Mark Dente wants to build a team concept, not a basketball program that has its success dependent too much on one player. Still, Dente isn't hesitant to say how much Burke, a 6'4" senior, means to his program. He is its best player. He also is its hardest worker. "I wish I had 12 of 'em like him," said Dente, a Copley alumnus who took over the program's reins last summer. For as many headaches as Burke created for teams last season, his versatility should cause a lot more migraines and fitful nights this year. A post player in past seasons, Burke spent his summer fine-tuning his outside shot and working on his ball-handling …
