The Fairlawn Planning Commission voted 4-0 for Ederer Construction to build next to Rockne's on West Market Street.
On Thursday, Fairlawn's Planning Commission gave the green light for a local contractor to build a one-story retail space next to Rockne's on West Market Street. The 6,600-square-foot building will hold one to two businesses, and construction will likely be underway by spring, according to the site's architect, David Starkey. A business has expressed interest in occupying part if not all of the space, but Alan Ederer, co-owner of Ederer Construction, declined to elaborate. It is known that the new location, with its 52 planned parking spots, shouldn't disrupt traffic along the bustling West Market corridor, according to a traffic study completed by the URS Corporation. "This new building is designed to be compatible with the adjacent …

The plan to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market was tabled in November.
The proponents of a new McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee and West Market Street will not be at the December 13 Planning Commission meeting. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission on Nov. 8 and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base. However, representatives asked the plan to be tabled after several residents asked questions that couldn't be answered. Commission members told representatives they could return with a new plan in December. McDonald's representatives also tabled two variance requests that were on November's Board of Zoning Appeals agenda. Below are the articles written about the plan. What else would you like to know about …

Fifteen residents spoke against the proposal Thursday night.
The proposal to build a McDonald's at the corner of Shiawassee Avenue and West Market Street was tabled by the Fairlawn Planning Commission Thursday night. McDonald's representatives presented their plan for a 4,500-square foot restaurant to the commission and explained that drive-thru would account for 70 percent of the customer base. Representative Gust Mecera promised non-invasive LED lighting, volume-controlled speakers and minimal trash on the property. "The building has a contemporary look," Mecera said. "It's a quality building that uses stone, metal and brick. We don't use any giant signs." Getting in and out of the proposed McDonald's from West Market Street would be a right-in and right-out only. Customers could also enter and …

Developers want to put in a GetGo gas station at the intersection of West Market Street and Trunko Road.
Plans to build a $2.2 million Giant Eagle GetGo gas station at the intersection of West Market and Trunk Road as tabled at a Planning Commission meeting in January, but committee members will discuss it again tonight. The site plan, created by TMS Engineers, of Stow, and Giant Eagle officials, includes a right entry off West Market, and a right exit back on to Market. Left turns are not permitted in or out onto Market. However, drivers can use Trunko to make a left turn. Planning committee members had safety concerns about drivers turning right onto Market in such a high traffic zone. Giant Eagle officials will present new plans tonight. The meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in council chambers. The agenda is attached to the media portion of …

The Fairlawn Planning Commission will meet Thursday to review plans for a Get Go gas station at the “blighted” West Market Street property that formerly served as Cavalier Cleaners and Ahern’s Florists. The $2.2 million project proposed by Giant Eagle Inc., headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA, requires a conditional use permit, consolidation of the lots at 3120 and 3130 W. Market St. and preliminary site plan approval. The planning commission meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in council chambers at City Hall. According to an application filed with the city on August 17, Giant Eagle is proposing construction of a 2,080-square-foot convenience store, six “multiple product dispenser pumps” offering 12 fueling stations covered by a canopy …

Planning commission OKs plan; Copley Township and developer say they'll sue.
Fairlawn Planning Commission members voted unanimously last night to install electronic gates that would close Rothrock Road west of Sawgrass Drive to through traffic from a proposed Walmart Superstore. Mayor William Roth submitted a site plan for the gates. He said traffic generated by the Walmart will destroy the residential character of the neighborhood. "We really have no other choice," Roth said. "If nothing happens (to regulate the commercial traffic) and this development goes in -- or any big box -- imagine the trouble you'll have on a two-lane road. It's unworkable." The gates will cost about $335,000 and will be installed after council approves bids, sometime before the end of summer. Roth said road improvements to handle the …
