Bath Man Honored by FBI for Aiding in Rescue Mission

Jerry Schorr helped Bath Police find and rescue Arthur Cole in July 2011.

On July 24, 2011, Arthur Cole, an Alzheimer's patient, was home from a treatment facility for the weekend. He disappeared from a Hametown Road home and police started a township-wide search. After searching for two-and-a-half days, Bath resident Jerry Schorr found Cole stuck is a swamp one block from the Hametown Road home, said Bath Police Chief Michael McNeely.  "Schorr heard Cole's cries for help," McNeely said. "He found Cole and contacted us and he assisted with the rescue." The rescue effort took a couple hours because the area was thickly wooded and wet with vegetation 6 to 8 feet high. Cole was pulled out and hospitalized, but had no major injuries. "It was one of the most tremendous acts of heroism I've seen in my career," McNeely…

Police Brief: Missing Copley Man Is OK

Utah Waldrup came home on his own late yesterday.

A Copley Township Police dispatcher is reporting that a missing local man with memory problems drove home on his own. Utah Waldrup, 89, of Kendall Road, left his home early Wednesday and drove as far as southern Ohio. Police said the man has dementia. "Apparently he got down there and got confused about where he wanted to go, but he knew the way home," the dispatcher said.  Police believe Waldrup wanted to visit his sister in Marshall, N.C. A statewide alert was issued for him and the car he was driving. Waldrup is the second elderly man to go missing in the Fairlawn-Bath Patch area this week.  Bath Township man Arthur Cole disappeared Sunday morning. Bath Police Search for Missing Man

July 25: Bath Township has discontinued its multi-agency search of the area for a missing elderly man with memory problems. Bath Police said this morning they are waiting for other clues to focus the search for Arthur Cole, 81, of Bath Township. Officers from Copley, Bath, Fairlawn and Granger Township searched until about 7 p.m. last night with help from the Ohio Highway Patrol. Cole was last seen by a neighbor at about 8 a.m. Sunday in front of family home on Hametown Road.  He had living at Arden Courts of Bath, a facility for patients with memory impairments, since January. According to police, Cole has alzheimer's and was home from a treatment facility for the weekend.
