When the Calderone family found out their youngest member Abbey, 16, had cancer this summer, their world stood still. "We were all shocked," said Megan Calderone, Abbey's sister and a Copley High graduate. "It came out of nowhere. It's not hereditary or anything." The sisters were at a dance class when Abbey began complaining about a pain in her knee. In the Calderone household, the cure for that was to ice it. But when the pain didn't go away, and Abbey's teacher expressed concern, Abbey and her family went to the doctor. Abbey was diagnosed with bone cancer. In October, doctor's removed Abbey's knee and part of her femur, Megan said. With four rounds of chemotherapy left, Abbey is attending physical therapy to get used to walking on a …

"Today's Go-Getter, Tomorrow's Leader" is a column that celebrates the children of the Copley-Fairlawn and Revere school districts. If you know an outstanding student, or have a Student of the Month in your midst, let us know. Email a photo and a description of what makes him or her great to megan.rozsa@patch.com. We'll feature new students weekly. This week, we're honoring Exidus Sadler, a fourth grade student at Arrowhead Primary School. Exidus' teacher, Theresa Kester, nominated him for Student of the Month, and had this to say about her student: Exidus Sadler is an interesting and amazing young man! An extremely respectful and hard-working student, Exidus always works to the height of his ability. Exidus has proven himself to be a …

The fourth grade class has been working since September to fund various class projects.
Every class leaves behind a legacy. At Arrowhead Primary School, Principal Andrew La Badie makes sure it's a good one. Each year the school administrators and PTA group sit down to think of a gift the fourth grade class can leave at the school. The class raises money for the project and uses it to buy things that wouldn't normally be bought with district money. "We pick an idea or an area that needs some attention in the school," La Badie said. "Then we come up with a plan and we give the students the opportunities to raise money for the project through the course of the year." This year the students are raising money to buy a giant metal arrowhead to put outside the front of the school. It will be crafted by local artist Frank Comunale…

Arrowhead's Nature Zone might be growing a new generation
One inevitable topic of conversation among folks involved in the local-food movement is where the next generation of farmers is coming from. It’s fine to be able to shop at farmer’s markets and get your just-picked weekly allotment from community supported agriculture, but someone needs to be on the other end of that transaction actually growing the stuff we love to eat. Are they out there? By the looks on the faces of kids at Arrowhead Primary School’s Nature Zone this summer, there might be a grower or two among them. The Nature Zone was one of six gardens on the Tour of Gardens sponsored by Master Gardener Volunteers of Summit County in June. As a Master Gardener tour volunteer at Arrowhead, I wandered through the many themed gardens, …

Vegetable sculptures were part of the children's competition in the Red, White and Blooming Flower show.
Arrowhead Primary School first grader Sam Poole won a ribbon for his monster made of butternut squash in the Red, White and Blooming Flower Show in Brecksville this weekend. The Monster Veggie contest was for young gardeners 5-7 years old. Mom Lisa Poole says her 6-year-old son Sam made his entry at the last minute. (His grandmother is an avid gardener.) The family lives in Copley Township. Additional photos from the show can be found in Roger Sommer's Viewfinder in today's Brecksville Patch.
