Fairlawn-Bath Library Kicks of Summer Reading with Chalk the Walk

The Fairlawn-Bath Branch Library kicked off its summer reading program Tuesday.

Tuesday was the first day of the summer reading program. And to celebrate, the library gave a group of children a box of chalk and told them to "Chalk the Walk."

The kids gathered outside the library and drew to their heart's content. Check out the pictures above to see their creations.

More about summer reading:

The program is for all ages, from preschool to adult, said Library Manager Jane Scott. Those interested register at the library. When readers finish a book, they fill out a slip and place it in a box for a chance to win prizes. At least six to seven people from each age group will win prizes each week.

There are no required readings, Scott said. The program goes until Aug. 4.

A second component to the reading program is Read at Your Own Pace: a reading program that incorporates exercise. The program, sponsored by the Akron-Summit County Library, , Akron Marathon and the Summit County Metro Parks, asks readers to read 26 books or articles and to run/walk 26 miles.

When readers sign up, they are provided with a pedometer. The program ends Sept. 10 and all those who complete the program will be entered into a prize drawing. For more information, visit www.akronlibrary.org/mbs.html.
