This week we feature Sophia Atienza, a seventh grade student at Copley Middle School.

"Today's Go-Getter, Tomorrow's Leader" is a column that celebrates the children of the Copley-Fairlawn and Revere school districts. We'll feature new students weekly. This week, we're honoring Sophia Atienza, a seventh-grade student at She is the daughter of Allan and Christina Atienza.

Sophia's teacher, Walter Senk, nominated her for Student of the Month, and had this to say about his student:

"Sophia Atienza has been honored by her 7th grade teachers as Student of the Month.  Her name is derived from the Greek word for 'Wisdom.'  Her name could describe why she is an honor roll student.  Wisdom is also how Sophia has 'balanced' her studying time with the many hours of gymnastic training at Pinnacle Gymnastics. We have a future Olympic champion walking our halls!

Sophia is a Level 8 gymnast and recently competed in the 12th Arnold Schwarzenegger Gymnastics Challenge in March.  She took third place for the balance beam events and floor competitions.  There were over 4,000 competitors from across the country.  Sophia spends at least ten hours a week at the gym, and many weekends away from home for competitions.

Her favorite color is pink.  During a recent project in Computer Tech, Sophia redesigned the traditional Facebook page from shades of blue to shades of pink.  The final project was colorful and provided information about the 2008 Gold Medal gymnast, Nastia Liukin.  In that project Sophia shared this famous quote by Nastia:  'Set daily goals and dreams.  Don’t ever be afraid to dream too big. Nothing is impossible. If you believe in yourself, you can achieve it.'  The quote describes Sophia’s will to achieve and pursue her goals.

Peers describe Sophia as kind, athletic, intelligent, responsible, compassionate, and funny.  Sophia is respectful to her teachers and friends.   In choir, Sophia is an enthusiastic singer! During Language Arts class, Sophia loves to do creative writing.  She often volunteers in class and has thoughtful comments to add to a discussion.  Sophia is a wonderful role model, she looks out for everyone and always speaks up for what is right.  Congratulations, Sophia, on Student of the Month, you are very deserving of this award."

Great job, Sophia!
