Revere Middle Schools Kids Harness the Power of the Pen

The seventh and eighth grade Power of the Pen teams competed in a district competition on Jan. 7.

 

Fourteen of most talented writers hit the road on Jan. 7 to compete in the Power of the Pen district competition at St. Vincent St. Mary's High School.

Power of the Pen is an interscholastic writing competition for seventh and eighth grade students. When students go to a competition, they write creative pieces based on prompts given by judges, and those pieces are then scored.

The team, made up of seventh and eighth graders, cleaned up, taking home several first place trophies and other awards. Eight of the students will move on to the regional competition at Kent State University on Feb. 25.

Awards are as follows:

• The seventh grade team won a second place trophy for overall points and five individual winners.

• Danielle Kakish won a 12th place medallion and Joci Scott won a 10th place medallion.

• Maya MacKeigan-Moore took first place overall as an individual writer in seventh grade because she had first place stories for all three rounds of writing.

• Sarah Blake and Madison Umina won Best of Round journals for their first place stories in a round of writing.

• Eighth graders Victoria Deng and Matt Fiedler will move on to the regional competition at Kent State.

• The entire seventh grade team — Sarah Blake, Joci Scott, Maya MacKeigan-Moore, Madison Umina, Anna Gamblin, and Danielle Kakish — are also going to the regional competition.
