New Principal Hired at Copley High School

Assistant will take the reins, school board decides

Copley High School has a new principal, and it's a familiar face.

The Copley-Fairlawn City School board this week approved a two-year contract for Matt Young, who has been assistant principal at the high school for the last year, to take over as principal.

Young replaces Cameron Ryba, who resigned prior to the 2012-2013 school year to become assistant superintendent for the Strongsville City Schools.

Young taught science with the district for 17 years before becoming assistant principal.

A news release from the School Board says Young's "effective leadership and willingness to accept additional responsibilities throughout the year have not only provided him with the necessary experience for his new position but has also proven his value to the building."

Young is actually the second high school principal the district has hired. The school board last August hired Brunswick High Assistant Principal Marisa Bavaro to fill the position, but within five hours of accepting, she resigned saying she just couldn't leave the Brunswick district.

Assistant Superintendent Aaron Sable was appointed to fill in.

Young, who grew up near Portsmouth, Ohio, attended Kent State University on a track scholarship, earning his bachelor’s degree in Secondary Science Education in 1995. In 1999, he earned a master's in educational administration from the University of Akron. He has been married for more than 14 years and has two sons, 10 and 12.
