Arrowhead Primary Student Raise Money for Legacy Project

The fourth grade class has been working since September to fund various class projects.

Every class leaves behind a legacy. At , Principal Andrew La Badie makes sure it's a good one.

Each year the school administrators and PTA group sit down to think of a gift the fourth grade class can leave at the school. The class raises money for the project and uses it to buy things that wouldn't normally be bought with district money.

"We pick an idea or an area that needs some attention in the school," La Badie said. "Then we come up with a plan and we give the students the opportunities to raise money for the project through the course of the year."

This year the students are raising money to buy a giant metal arrowhead to put outside the front of the school. It will be crafted by local artist Frank Comunale.

So far the kids have raised money at several candy sales events, including Halloween and Valentine's Day. Each event has raised roughly $250, said La Badie. Now they're working on "chores for change," where parents pay them to do chores and the money is pooled in a water jug.

"The student feedback has been awesome," La Badie said. "They're really into it and they know what's coming to them if they raise enough money. The artist actually came in and talked about what he does. They were really excited to see a small version of the arrowhead."

La Badie is hoping the sculpture will be completed and installed by the end of May.

"I think this is a really good opportunity for students to give back to the school before they leave," he said. "It gives them a point of pride to say they did that. It's something the other classes look forward to and wonder what their project will be."

Other fourth grade legacy projects included buying patio furniture for the reading patio and buying a peace pole for the peace garden in the school's nature zone.
