UPS bring the holidays to Stewart's Caring Place

UPS in Richfield give back to local cancer community and volunteer with children's programs

The holidays were a little brighter at this year. On Dec. 16, 2011, Stewart’s teamed up with Eric Nauer from UPS to host its first holiday party for families touched by cancer in the local area.

Crafts, food and games for all ages were provided for the children organized by Certified Child Life Specialist Avni Sahgal. The highlight of the evening was Santa’s arrival announced via truck horn! Kids, parents and staff rushed to the door to see Santa driving through the parking lot in a huge UPS freight truck. Gift bags filled to the brim with toys were delivered by Santa’s helpers, and each child had the opportunity to thank Santa while sitting on his lap.

Nauer and his co-workers from the UPS corporate office in Richfield chose Stewart’s Caring Place as its designated charity of choice last year. Employees volunteer with the children’s specialty programs and helped Sahgal with her first children’s Halloween party in 2010.

“We’re so grateful for Eric and everyone at UPS,” said Sahgal. “Not only do they help financially for our children’s parties, but the volunteers come with ideas and open hearts. They interact great with our families, and they’re very much appreciated.”

Some families have been coming to Stewart’s events for more than five years, even after a family member has been in remission, or after losing a loved one.

“Providing long-term consistency and support to our participants is an essential part of the cancer journey,” said Executive Director Sarah Tower.  “It is not for us to decide how quickly one should cope or what type of support or education people need. We want our cancer community to always feel welcomed and nurtured.”

The families attending the holiday party had a great time, and enjoy the opportunity to escape medical offices, doctor appointments, and conversations related to cancer.  For more information on Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center, please call 330.836.1772 or visit www.StewartsCaringPlace.org
