Stewart's Caring Place Volunteer Chosen for Hower House Service Award

Sally Oneacre, active volunteer with Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center, was awarded a Hower House Service Award

On Thursday night the historic Hower House in downtown Akron bustled with local community members coming to support one another for the Hower Community Service Awards. Excitement filled the air as the 141-year-old Victorian home was set-up similar to a theatre-in-the-round for award winners, their nominators, friends and family.

Organizations had the opportunity to nominate volunteers who have shown commitment through hours of service to the organization, helping them achieve their mission. Our very own Sally Oneacre was chosen as one of the awardees.

Oneacre has been volunteering with Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center since November 2009. After visiting the annual holiday arts and crafts boutique, she opened her heart to Stewart’s, quickly becoming a regular weekly volunteer at our reception desk. As a registered dietitian she also began to offer her services to our participants by conducting special food-related programs and individual nutrition consultations.

In 2010 Oneacre applied her nutrition knowledge to the annual Hope Walk, helping choose the food items offered to our walkers. She stepped up in the leadership role, chairing the event in 2011 and 2012, helping the organization raise more than $118,000. Oneacre has agreed to co-chair the 2013 event with Elizabeth Banasiak.

As nominator Volunteer Coordinator Candy Mirman introduced Oneacre to the Hower House crowd, she explained, “Most important is her kindness for our participants… Sally is welcoming, eager and passionate about sharing her knowledge about the programs and services we can offer them and their families.”

Many times participants will stop by the facility specifically looking for Oneacre, assuming she is a staff member since her message about Stewart’s is so spirited and enlightening.

We were thrilled she was chosen for this great honor, and look forward to continue working with her and all the amazing volunteers who donate their time to Stewart’s every day.
