Pink Promotes Prevention

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month - a good reminder to focus on your breast health, be aware of their family history and take action against breast cancer.

With fall brings the crisp air, vibrant leaves and school fundraisers. One of the largest fundraising months of the year is October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It seems like everyone is doing something pink related. Whether it’s pink ribbon-shaped bagels at , or pink-bottled products at your local salon, everyone is sponsoring the cause.

Whether or not you’re into all the pink hype, this month gives us an extra reminder about breast cancer. Women need to focus on their health, be aware of their family history and take action against breast cancer.

According to The American Cancer Society, since 1990 more and more women have been surviving breast cancer due to early detection through mammograms. Annual exams are recommended for women over 40.  However, breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer death in women, exceeded only by lung cancer.

The American Cancer Society offers helpful prevention information below:

  • Eat a healthy diet to help control weight, since being overweight or obese may raise breast cancer risk.
  • Get regular physical activity. The American Cancer Society recommends 30 minutes a day, five or more days per week. Forty-five to 60 minutes a day is even better for reducing breast cancer risk.
  • Limit the amount of alcohol you drink to no more than one drink per day. Alcohol is clearly linked to an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

Most importantly, talk to your doctor if you notice any changes in your breasts or have any other concerns. That conversation could save your life.
