MORABITO MOB WALKS TO WHACK CANCER FOR STEWART’S CARING PLACE: CANCER WELLNESS CENTER

Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center's 7th Annual Hope Walk raises more than $50,000 and has more than 500 walkers on May 11 at Bicentennial Park in Fairlawn.

Angela Morabito-Conrad and her family have one of the largest teams every year at Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center’s annual Hope Walk. Despite the chilly weather and light rain, this year was no exception.

The Morabito Mob arrived at the Fairlawn Community Center in their signature gray t-shirts and dark sunglasses on May 11. Though the group’s slogan is “Walking to Whack Cancer” the Morabito family is not part of a mob at all. They continue to honor their deceased father, Patrick Morabito, and his love for the saying "You're going to be swimming with the fishes." Morabito created the fun team name prior to losing his battle to colon cancer in 2011.

"My dad was a strong, Italian, family-man, who thought he didn't need help after his diagnosis," explained daughter Angela. "After his first Hope Walk, he became more involved at Stewart's, started attending a support group, and him and my mom would go to different programs at Stewart's together."

Angela continues to organize the family team; creating a flyer each year and getting more and more family members involved. She updates the group's t-shirts each year and continues to walk because "As strong as he was, Stewart's was a place that was able to help him, and it was extremely valuable to him and our family," she said.

This year's Hope Walk had more than 500 walkers, its largest turnout yet, and raised more than $50,000. Attendees enjoyed tunes from The Swizzle Sticks Band and local musician Zach Friedhof. Miller South National Honor Society students volunteered their time at the face painting table, while families played corn hole.
