Kent State University Intern Helps Stewart's Caring Place with Programming Needs

Kent State Intern Offers Support to Cancer Wellness Center

As a non-profit organization, Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center relies heavily on its volunteers. Massage therapists, attorneys, dieticians, all help Stewart’s offer services and programs free-of-charge to the local cancer community.

Stewart’s also works with local university internship programs, offering students a hands-on, real-world work experience.

New to the Stewart’s team is Programming Intern Karen Stewart. Stewart is a senior at Kent State University. She is currently studying human development and family studies, with a minor in family food nutritional studies.

Stewart joined the SCP team in January and works closely with Supportive Care Director Becki Brown helping with program development.

“I really wanted to learn more about the cancer community and how to meet the needs of families touched by the disease,” said Stewart. “It is truly beautiful what Stewart's Caring Place has to offer families on a cancer journey, and I am so honored to be an intern here.”

Stewart helps Brown on developing new programs and creating educational pieces for SCP participants. She also has the opportunity to help participants in the resource library and in the wig room.

“Working at a cancer wellness center is such a rewarding experience,” beams Stewart. “Whether a participant has been here for four days or four years, there are resources and programs that can help meet their specific needs and it is beyond amazing!”

Meet Stewart and other SCP volunteers at the 7th Annual Hope Walk on Saturday, May 11 at Bicentennial Park in Fairlawn. Registration begins at 8am, the walk starts at 9am. Pre-register online for $15, or on walk-day for $20. All donations help keep Stewart’s programs and services free-of-charge to those in need.
