Bikers for Boobs Raises Thousands for Local Cancer Wellness Center

Bikers for Boobs poker run raises $10,000 for Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center.

Helmets, leather and motorcycles flooded Summit and Stark County roads as the annual Bikers for Boobs fundraiser kicked off at the Rubber City Harley Davidson in Cuyahoga Falls on Sept. 16. More than 750 people participated in the 116-mile poker run to help raise money for breast cancer.

This was its third year and the fundraiser raised more than $17,000. $10,000 was donated to Stewart’s Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center in West Akron, and $7,000 was given to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, a walk sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

“We really wanted to keep the majority of the dollars raised local, helping our own community battling breast cancer,” said Bikers for Boobs Ohio Director Debbie Stafford.

The money given to Stewart’s Caring Place will be designated to breast cancer-related programs, lectures, and other services geared toward breast cancer patients and survivors.

The poker run began with a pancake breakfast donated by Rubber City Harley Davidson, included five stopping points for riders to draw cards, and ended with dinner donated by Legends Sports Pub & Grille in Green. Door prizes, raffles and a live band entertained the crowd after the long ride.

The fundraiser continues to double each year, in both dollars raised and attending participants.

It all began fours year ago when Stafford and some friends were in Georgia on vacation. They saw some fellow bikers wearing Bikers for Boobs t-shirts and they searched the city high and low to find the store that sold them.

They learned that the shirts were from the fundraiser in Atlanta where the Bikers Battling Breast Cancer™ organization was created. They contacted founder Lisa Herman and created their own Bikers for Boobs chapter in Ohio.

The committee consists of four women dedicated to breast cancer awareness. They’re already starting to plan for next year.
