It's Time for Salamander Walks

It's breeding season for the spotted salamanders, and they're migrating through Bath Township.

Every year, The University of Akron hosts walks for the public to catch a glimpse of the lizards.

The walks depend on the weather and on the salmanders' progress, so they're generally called at a moments' notice.

You can check the blog by Dr. Peter Niewiarowski of the University of Akron, who, with his students, monitors and documents the salamanders each year.

The walks start at 8:45 p.m. and head through the Steiner Pond area.

Walkers meet at the Bath Center parking lot and are urged to dress for cold, muddy conditions and to bring a flashlight or headlamp.

A blog posted March 11 says "no walk tonight, but soon."

"There will be several teams of people checking for migration activity across the greater Akron area, so we will not be able to host a walk tonight.  However, we will keep you posted and expect that there will be a walk somewhere in the next two weeks, weather permitting…," it says.

During the walk, Niewiarowski also talks about his 15 years of research on the spotted salamander.
