How to: Recycle in Fairlawn

Fairlawn's Recycling Center is used by about 70 percent of residents, officials say.

Living in an environmentally friendly home can be as easy as regularly recycling newspaper, aluminum cans and corrugated cardboard. Fairlawn city officials have made the recycling process easier than ever at the compactor/recycling facility on South Smith Road.

"The compactor is funded by the city," said Ernie Staten, deputy director of the Public Service Department. "That's why we're strict about only Fairlawn residents using it."

Before residents can use the free recycling facility, they have to register with the city at the Public Service Department. Bring a utility bill and car registration, and residents will be issued a decal that goes on the lower passenger side of the car's windshield.

The recycling system has been in place for about 39 years, but the newest drive-thru facility was built in 2003, Staten said. On weekdays, nearly 200 cars drive through, and on weekends, Staten said he's seen anywhere from 300 to 400.

"I think it's so popular because it's free," Staten said. "Every resident does it for free and we're close to 70 percent of the population using it. That's huge. The people love it."

Last year, all the recyclables generated a $17,625 return to the city, Staten said. Newspapers brought in the most revenue at nearly $9,500.

City departments also take advantage of the center, recycling everything they can, Staten added.

"When it comes to recycling, we're at the forefront," Staten said. "Our departments recycle everything possible. With the idea of going green, Fairlawn is way ahead."

The Public Service Department also hosts a shredding day, which is held on June 9 this year. The department will also host a household hazardous waste disposal day, but the date is to be determined.

May 16 is Beautification Day and residents can bring tires, steel, aluminum and large waste oil to the department.
