Fairlawn City Council Waives Trash Compactor Fee

Council adjusts appropriations and transfers to budget; other ordinances on hold.

The Fairlawn City Council withheld action on several ordinances before it, opting instead to keep them in committee for another session, including the extension of a moratorium on any new entertainment device arcades in the city for another six months.

Law Director Ed Riegler said with anticipated changes in state law, Fairlawn would best be served by holding off on allowing arcades before the state makes its changes. “We’re not exactly sure what it’s going to say yet,” Riegler said. “We have until July” to extend the moratorium.

The council did pass on a 5-0 vote with two council member absent to authorize appropriations and transfers to make budget amendments as income and expenses sometimes shift during the fiscal year.

The council also approved a resolution 5-0 to waive the annual fee for public use of the Andrew E. Sombati Compactor and Recycling Facility.

Council President Russell Sharnsky said, “This is one of the most commented-on items that I hear about, is the compactor service, being able to provide this residents with this service.”

Other ordinances held in committee were entering a sourcing office affiliate membership; an agreement with Hosted Technology Exchange LLC to spend $15,000 to acquire new telecommunication equipment and support for the equipment; and an ordinance to revise ordinances to update them with revised codified ordinances and repeal ordinances and resolutions that conflict with the revised ordinances.

The next committee of the whole meeting will be 6 p.m. July 11. The next regular council meeting will be July 18.

James Butler and Barbara Potts were absent at Monday’s meeting.
