Bath Township Trustees Move to Stop Snowmobiling in Parks

Police will increase patrols

Bath Trustees have instructed police to increase patrols of township parks to stop snowmobiling.

"We've had a snowy winter so far, and people want to get out there," Trustee Becky Corbett said, "but it's illegal."

The Bath Township Nature Preserve is officially open for winter hiking, and three other parks allow visitors until dusk, but none of the parks permit snowmobile use at any hour.

Corbett said police will be watching for people operating snowmobiles in the parks, and for after-hours trespassers. Offenders could be ticketed or required to appear in  court, depending on the incident.

Trustee Jim Nelson said the increased enforcement has been implemented to protect residents.

"What we are trying to do is protect people from themselves," Nelson said. The trustee added that it is likely that someone who had an accident while in the park at night might not be found for hours and could risk severe injury.
