Ballot Issue: Bath Township Road Levy Renewal

The levy funds road paving and repair programs, along with ice and snow removal.

What: Issue 4 is a 1.4-mill, five-year renewal levy that funds the maintenance and repair of ’s 63 miles of roads.

Election Day: Nov. 8

History: Township Administrator William Snow said this is the levy’s “fourth time around,” having first been approved in 1996 and renewed every five years since. In 2006, voted to reduce the millage from 1.5 to 1.4 mills to save taxpayers money.

Snow said the measure generates $745,000 annually for all costs related to road care. “One of the biggest things it supports is snow and ice control. It also pays for paving, maintenance of roads, culverts, ditches, signage, mowing and wages,” he explained.

The levy’s cost for the owner of a home valued at $100,000 is $42.88 annually.

Argument For: The measure is a renewal of an existing tax, so township residents simply continue paying what they’ve already paid for years.

“Residents vote for the services they want at the level they want,” Snow said. “This is special revenue that’s all focused on the roads. We can’t use it anywhere else.”

Argument Against: There hasn’t been a public argument against the levy during this election cycle.
