3 Areas in Fairlawn Make Top 100 on Crash List

Can you guess with street made the unpopular cut?

Three sections of road in Fairlawn placed in the top 123 in a study of high-crash streets in Summit County.

All three are on West Market Street.

The report, done by the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study, collected crash statistics from 2010 to 2012 to identify the riskiest streets for drivers in the county.

Placing No. 34 was a third-mile stretch of West Market Street between Ghent and Miller roads. That portion of road in Fairlawn sees 27,380 vehicles a day, and recorded 24 crashes during the survey period.

No. 44 was the half-mile section of West Market between Cleveland-Massillon and Smith roads, with 43 crashes.

And No. 97 was West Market from Miller to the east city limits, with 30 crashes.

Various statistics were used to calculate the ranking, including average daily traffic, the severity of the accidents and the length of road.

Akron's Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, from West Market to North Broadway Street, took the no. 1 slot due, in part, to the severity of its 41 crashes.

Copley also made the list, ranking No. 13 for its section of Medina Road (State Route 18) between I-77 and Cleveland-Massillon Road. There were 115 collisions there.

The AMATS study is intended to draw attention to potentially unsafe roadways likely in need of redesign, and the study may be used by a community as a first step in the process of applying for federal Highway Safety Program funding.
