Witness Tips Off Police to Impaired Interstate Driver

The following information was supplied by the Bath Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A motorist who called police with concerns about another driver led to arrest a man after finding drugs and paraphernalia with him Jan. 1 on Interstate 77.

Police were called at 9:47 p.m. by a motorist who was following a red Volkswagon Jetta southbound on the interstate. Police arrived and watched as the Jetta driver committed several lane violations while driving slowly.

The driver, a 26-year-old man, “appeared lethargic and a slight odor of suspected marijuana was noted,” police reported. Officers said the man performed poorly on several field tests.

The driver consented to a vehicle search and police found a glass bowl used for smoking marijuana and a pill container with suspected marijuana residue under the passenger seat. They also found “a baggie containing 3.43 grams of green vegetable matter” in the man's pants pocket.

The driver was arrested and taken to the Bath Police Department for processing. He was released with a summons to appear in court on charges of impaired driving, lanes of travel violations, possession of drugs and possession of drug paraphernalia.
