Winter Returns for Another Stay

Ice followed by snow causes trouble on roads.

In case anyone was fooled by last week’s warming spell, Mother Nature reminded us Monday that it’s still winter. Even though most schools were out to observe Presidents Day, conditions caused havoc in some neighborhoods Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning shortly before 6 p.m. Monday effective until 10 a.m. Tuesday. Snow is expected to create hazardous driving conditions and low visibility. Accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is expected by morning.

Bath Township police reported multiple accidents in the afternoon, but they had all been cleared by 7:30 p.m.

Fairlawn managed to avoid much trouble yesterday. Dispatcher John Riding said only a few fender benders had occurred Monday afternoon. “We’re at 85 for the year,” he said, but Monday was exceptionally quiet.

Cuyahoga Falls and Stow dispatchers were quite busy and said they wouldn’t have a reliable count of accidents until the snow subsides and authorities can catch up with the paperwork.

Power outages from earlier Monday lingered into the evening in some spots around Northeast Ohio. About 1,700 customers in Lakewood were still without power at 7:40 p.m. according to FirstEnergy estimates.

FirstEnergy spokesperson Mark Durbin said “we’re hopeful” to get power restored soon, but some areas may not be restored until Tuesday.
