Suspected Shoplifter Gives Police A Fake Name

The following information was supplied by the Fairlawn Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

An unemployed Akron man suspected of shoplifting $655 worth of clothing at at  gave police a false name. Once they found out his real identity, police discovered he had an active warrant for failure to appear on a burgarly charge.

were called just after 2:30 p.m. Tuesday by a Macy’s security agent who said he watched as a man “grabbed miscellaneous clothing totaling $655 … then fled” the store. The agent said the man got into the passenger seat of a 1997 Cadillac in the parking lot. The vehicle then headed west on West Market Street.

A officer spotted the vehicle traveling west on Medina Road and stopped it near the in Bath.

Police said the front-seat passenger gave what turned out to be a false name, Social Security number and birthdate.

Once his true identity was established, a computer check revealed the 40-year-old man had an active warrant through the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office for failure to appear on a burglary charge.

Police said clothing that was reported stolen was found on the floor behind the passenger seat. The Macy’s security agent was called to the traffic stop and identified the passenger as the man who he saw shoplift the clothing, which was then retained by Macy’s.

The vehicle’s driver was not charged. The passenger was arrested and charged with theft and misrepresentation of identity, both first-degree misdemeanors, and released to a Wayne County sheriff’s deputy.
