Stay Safe This Holiday Season, Don't Drive Drunk

Six tips to help keep you safe on the road this holiday season.

It's the holiday season, so let the festivities begin.

But be smart.

You can have fun and be safe, too. The roads are already slick from the cold and , so don't add to the hazard by driving after drinking that extra sip of egg nog or champagne.

Drunken-driving deaths declined in 2010 in many parts of the country, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, fatalities from alcohol-impaired driving crashes still account for one in three deaths on roads each year.

This holiday season, the NHTSA and the Ad Council would like to remind everyone that the best way to stay safe is to plan ahead and designate a sober driver before you head out for your festivities.

Here are six tips that can help keep you safe on the roads:

  1. Remind others to be safe; use one of these holiday-themed posters on your personal blog or Facebook page.
  2. Designate a sober driver and leave your keys at home.
  3. Be the sober driver and keep your friends safe.
  4. Stash cash in your pocket for a taxi or bus ride.
  5. Find and keep the number of a designated driver service such as this one.
  6. And if you see a drunken driver on the road, don't hesitate to call the ; it may save a life.
