New Fairlawn Fire Chief is Russ Hose

Hose was appointed at Monday's City Council meeting.

You could say fire fighting is in Russ Hose's blood. He's been with the Fairlawn Fire Department since 1982 and was a firefighter in the Air Force for four years before that. His father was a firefighter in Akron for nearly three decades and he used to play in the station growing up.

So who better to fill the department's fire chief void than Hose? He was appointed to the position at Monday night's council meeting and will officially take over on Feb. 6.

"There were 80 applications turned in and a search committee narrowed it down to three," said Mayor William Roth. "I look forward to working with Russ in the future."

Hose, 55, is the third fire chief in Fairlawn's history, Roth said. Former Chief Glenn Goodrich retired in September.

"It's nice to see the city promote from within," said City Council President Russ Sharnsky. "It's nice to see that he's moved up through the ranks."

Hose said he was overwhelmed at the appointment and can't wait to get into action.

"I'm excited, this is quite an honor," Hose said. "It's been a long six months and I'm glad it's come to a conclusion."

Hose looks forward to implementing ideas he's had through the years to make the department run more efficiently. He's floated some of his ideas already and said the other firefighters are on board and supportive.

Hose will be sworn in by Mayor Roth at the Feb. 6 council meeting.
