Got Drugs? Leave 'em Here

Plenty of people are getting rid of old prescription medication the safe way

Wonder if people use Bath Township Police Department's collection box for old prescription drugs?

You bet.

"It's been quite effective," said Police Chief Mike McNeely."It fills up about once a week."

McNeely said people deposit unneeded prescription medication at a rate of about 1,200 pounds a year, or 100 pounds a month.

Bath Township installed the collection box in the township hall parking lot a couple years ago to offer residents a safe way to dispose of medication that has expired or is no longer needed.

When McNeely empties the box, he logs all the different drugs inside and stores them for pick-up by Summit County, which takes them to an incinerator.

"That way, they don't fall into the hands of children or teens," McNeely said. "Or make their way into our waterways if people flush them."
