Gas Leak Forces Evacuations at West Market and Ghent Road in Fairlawn

Fairlawn and Bath Police had the intersection closed from 8 a.m. to about 10:30 a.m.

Contractors working on widening Trunko Road hit and broke a 4-inch natural gas pipe around 8 a.m. Monday morning. and departments responded to the intersection of West Market Street and Ghent Road to close the intersection from both directions.

The gas leak forced the fire department to evacuate the next door BP gas station, said Fairlawn fire Capt. Rich Dobson. It also caused National Tire and Battery to close its doors until the road was opened.

"Any time you have a gas leak, it's a fire hazard," Dobson said. "We monitored the atmosphere in the neighboring hotel where people were sleeping to make sure it wasn't explosive air. It's OK in there."
