Fairlawn Police Blotter: Offshore Call Scam, Misplaced Drugs and Thieves Caught in the Act
The following arrest information was supplied by the Fairlawn Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.
Theft, Deception: On Friday, July 29 at 7:11 p.m., a man phoned a woman’s Smith Road residence and claimed to be her grandson.
He informed the elderly woman that he had just been in a bad car wreck and needed $3,000.
A second male picked up the phone claiming to be the man’s attorney, and told the woman to wire the money to an offshore account in the Dominican Republic via Western Union.

The woman later spoke to her real grandson who informed her that he had neither left the country nor had he been in a car accident. Police are investigating the matter.

Drug Abuse: At about noon on Saturday, July 30, a First Merit customer walked into the bank and handed a pouch to one of the employees that contained marijuana and paraphernalia.
The man claimed he had found the bag of drugs in the parking lot. The employee immediately called the police, and officers were not able to determine who had dropped the illegal drugs off Market Street.
Theft: On Friday, August 5 at 6:15 p.m., a Macy’s employee watched two girls pluck items off the racks and take them into a nearby fitting room.
When the teenagers emerged, the items had vanished. The employee called security who, in turn, called the FPD. Officers arrived, found $300 in merchandise on the suspects, and arrested them.
