Fairlawn Police Blotter: Attention Shoppers, the Fire Lane is Not a Nursery.

Some are surprised to find that leaving children alone in a car is illegal.

Two women were cited in separate, unrelated incidents with leaving children alone in their cars while they shopped. 

  • According to a police report, Heidi B. Harper, 35, of the 200 block of Owosso Ave. parked in the fire lane in front of in Rosemont Commons April 9. Her two sons, ages 5 and 11 were alone in the car for approximately 9 minutes. 

Police were patrolling of the parking lot when they discovered the 2007 Mitsubishi with the engine running and both children inside.

Harper told police that she didn’t know it was illegal to leave the children unattended. She said in Florida it is legal to leave the children in a car for 15 minutes or less. Police charged Harper with leaving children unattended in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. She also was cited for parking in a fire lane.

  • An off-duty Summit County Sheriff’s Deputy working security for at 2775 W. Market noticed that a toddler was alone in the back of a Chevy Impala. Fairlawn Police waited by the car for Desaray Williams, 42, of the 500 block of Storer Ave. She was charged with leaving her son unattended in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.

Williams told police she was in the store to get medicine for the child. She said she was gone for about 4 minutes and did not want to wake the child because he was ill.

  • According to a police report, Kelly A. Perry, of Akron, admitted taking two gift cards valued at $50 and $100 from the office of . Perry was charged April 13 with misdemeanor theft.  The cards were used at Macy’s at Westfield South Park Mall in Strongsville.

Police said the thefts occurred sometime last December, while Perry worked at Wells Fargo opening incoming mail.

  • Police are investigating a burglary in the 400 block of Augusta Drive. David W. Rookard told police he believed someone entered his house through the garage using the keypad sometime Saturday, April 16 or Sunday, April 17.

Diamond rings and jewelry valued at $4,500 were reported missing. An Xbox video game and two 30-inch flat-screen televisions also were taken. There was no sign of forced entry. Rookard told police he personally checked and locked all the doors in the residence before leaving.
