Drunk West Virginian Caught With Bong and 12-Pack on Interstate

Information provided by the Bath Township Police Department. An arrest does not indicate a conviction.

On June 8, a motorist on Interestate 77 called to report someone driving erratically heading north, a police report said.

The motorist watched the 42-year-old woman pull into the rest area, run over the curb and come to a stop.

When officers arrived, they found Paula Elkins, of West Virginia, sitting in her car, the report said. Officers could smell alcohol and saw a 12-pack of Bud Lite with two empty cans sitting on a seat. There was also a glass pipe with marijuana residue in it and several prescription pills, the report said.

Police asked Elkins to do a couple field sobriety tests, which she failed, and in a breath test, she blew a 0.228, the report said. The legal limit is 0.08.

Elkins told police she had a fight with her spouse earlier in the day and decided to just get in the car and drive.

Police charged Elkins with driving under the influence and possession of drug paraphernalia. Other charges are pending, said police Chief Michael McNeely.
