Copley Shooting Death Causes Released

County: Victims died quickly.

Examinations by the Summit County Medical Examiner have been completed on seven victims and the gunman in Sunday's in Copley Township. 

Summit County's Chief Medical Investigator Gary Guenther said the victims died quickly. All but one had been shot in the head at least once.

The final report will be issued in 10 to 12 weeks, Guenther said. It remains to be determined whether Hance was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the murders.

"It will be four to six weeks before those tests are back," Guenther said. (The determination) all depends on what's in a person's system." Prescription drugs can also affect the findings.

Guenther said toxicology screens have been performed on all victims.

The cause of death for all victims has been ruled a homicide.

The examinations revealed the following injuries.

The Gunman

  • Michael Hance, 51, died of a single gunshot wound to the torso. 

The Victims

  • Russell Johnson, 67, Hance's neighbor -- gunshot wounds to the head and chest.
  • Goodrun Johnson, 64, Russell' s wife -- one gunshot wound to the head.
  • Bryan Richard Johnson, 44, the Johnsons' son -- gunshot wounds to the head.
  • Autumn Johnson, 16, Bryan's daughter -- gunshot wounds to the chest, neck and extremities.
  • Amelia Shambaugh, 16, friend of Autumn -- gunshot wounds to the head and leg.
  • Craig Dieter, 51,  brother of Hance's girlfriend -- multiple gunshot wounds to head.
  • Scott Calvin Dieter, 11, Craig's son -- gunshot wound to the head.

Rebecca Dieter, Hance's girlfriend, also was shot and remains hospitalized for her injuries.

Police said earlier today that Hance was shot by Copley Police officer . He approached Hance with former police officer Keith Lavery. The men fired at Hance -- who police believe was shot by Campbell's bullet -- when he refused to drop his weapon.
