Caller Wants to Fix Computer Over the Phone: Bath Police Blotter

The following information was provided by the Bath Police Department

 

A Knollwood Lane resident finally had enough of the strange phone calls and contacted police March 23.

The resident said that for at least three weeks, he's been getting calls from someone claiming to be working with Microsoft.

The caller says there's a problem with the man's Dell computer, and asks him to turn it on so he can check it out.

The resident asked police to look into the situation.

The incident is likely part of a growing scam in which a caller gets a victim to turn on his computer, then walks him through some "fixes" that actually give him access to all the personal information on the hard drive, including passwords and banking information.

More Fake Money

Another counterfeit $20 bill turned up at Taco Bell on Medina Road March 23.

A phony bill was also found there March 14, and also at Speedway.

Police turn over counterfeiting investigations to the U.S. Secret Service.
