Bath Township Horse Show Opens Saturday

Annual fire department fundraiser brings hundreds of horses and riders to the township.

The has equipment to rival many a big city agency.

The township's state-of-the art gear includes: high pressure breathing air compressor, scuba equipment, uniforms to protect firefighters from blood-born pathogens, fire trucks capable of carrying 5,000 gallons of water, heavy duty smoke ventilation fans and high wattage portable lighting.

Much of the cost for equipment, maintenance and training necessary keep firefighters safe is at least partially paid for by Bath Fire Department Horse Show.

The horse show has been an annual event for the last 62 years. It is the project Bath Fire Department Inc., a non-profit fund-raising agency. The horse show begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday at the fire department training grounds at the corner of Everett and Revere Roads, across from Revere High School.

Cheryl Jackson is a secretary for Bath Fire & Rescue who is in her fourteenth year as an organizer of the event, which she said last year made a profit of about $25,000. "We use some of the money for memorial donations and we have helped buy turnout gear and an ambulance," Jackson said. "None of this equipment is cheap, so having extra money for these purposes is a big help."

also help organize the event. BVS member/Township Trustee Elaina Goodrich said the fund-raising effort has gotten more sophisticated as the years have passed. "We used to go door-to-door to get donations for the horse show, now there's a mass mailing that goes out to everyone in town."

Goodrich said virtually the entire community turns out at the horse show for the annual event. "A lot of people just come by for an hour or two, not for the horses, but to show their support for the fire department. Then there's horse people who stay for a major amount of time."

Either way, Bath firefighters are the benificiaries.

If last year is any guide, the 2011 Horse Show will have more than 400 events, 100 riders and more than 70 competition classes.

Trophies, prizes and cash will be awarded in a variety of categories. Points will be awarded toward yearly totals for the Central Ohio Saddle Club Association (COSCA) and  Up and Over Hunting and Combined Equestrian Training Association.

Champion and Reserve Champion titles will be awarded to the two horses with the most points in Walk-Trot Cross Rails, Low, Novice and Children’s Hunter Division, in the local show on Sunday.
