Bath Firefighters Rescue Dog from Icy Pond

Bath Township firefighters rescued a dog from a freezing pond Thursday morning after the pup fell through the ice.

Firefighter Steve Schultz said the property owner called for help shortly before 9 a.m. after seeing a neighbor's dog, "Bobby," in the water.

Schultz said firefighters put on their ice suits and responded to the scene, where they saw the dog in the middle of the lake, with only his head above water.

Schultz waded out into the water while Firefighter Steve Kamp held onto the safety rope.

"We had to break through the ice to get to him," Schultz said. 

Bobby, meanwhile, was barely staying above the water.

"You could tell he was real, real cold. He wasn't fighting at all," Schultz said. 

Schultz got behind the dog and "gave him a hug," then Kamp and Firefighter Geoff Kuzas pulled both to shore with the rope.

Bobby was taken to Metro Animal Hospital, where an employee said she could not release information on Bobby's condition.

The Bath Police Department posted a photo and information about the rescue on its Facebook page.

It says Bobby is being treated for exposure to the freezing water.

Bath firefighters are trained in ice and water rescue and, in fact, had a training session only a few weeks ago.
